The beloved long-running series Modern Family is leaving the airwaves after 11 seasons, but before the show says goodbye, it’s saying “bonjour!” The sitcom shot an episode in France during this final season and the actors had plenty to say about it.
Even though she’s been to Paris in the past, this trip was still special to star Sofia Vergara (Gloria). “[I]t’s one of the most beautiful, romantic places in the world,” she told TV Critics at the ABC winter press tour in Pasadena. “So it’s one my favorite. I was very excited when [I learned] Modern Family was going to go there, because every time that we travel as a group, we have the best time.”
The actress says that one of the best parts of the ensemble traveling abroad is that they’re guaranteed to spend time together once they’ve wrapped for the day. “We get to see each other even more than when we’re here in Los Angeles because when we’re in Los Angeles, everybody goes to their home. And when we’re all in a hotel at the same time, we… get to spend more time together. So, for me, it was very exciting. And I was able to do a lot of shopping.”
Hilarity took place not just on-camera. Series star Eric Stonestreet, who has won two Primetime Emmys for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Cam, shared that he accidentally ate butter, thinking it was cheese while in Paris.
“I took a picture of the wrapper to send to my girlfriend to be, like, ‘We have to find this cheese when we get back to the United State,” Stonestreet recollects. “I took a hunk of it and put it in the middle of a piece of salami, rolled it up, and ate it and was, like, ‘Is anyone else going to eat this cheese? Because, if not, I’m going to eat it all.’ I was, like, thinking afterwards that if Julie [Bowen, Claire] saw me doing that, she was probably thinking, ‘Well, that’s why he’s overweight, right there.'”
“I just thought you really liked butter,” says Bowen, who has also won two Primetime Emmys in the Supporting category for a comedy series. The premise that brings the family to Paris is Jay (Ed O’Neill) earning a lifetime achievement award, but a longtime nemesis may try to thwart Jay’s joy! Will it happen? Stay tuned to find out. The episode, titled Paris, is set to air on Wednesday, February 20 in the ABC show’s regular weekly timeslot at 9 PM ET.
