Days of Our Lives (DOOL) fans are preparing to watch Lani’s baby die this week, which has those of us at Soap Hub incredibly hearbroken but also scratching our collective heads.
After all, Lani (Sal Stowers) is the daughter of longtime Salem resident and mayor, Abe (James Reynolds), and Eli (Lamon Archey), who is a Horton is part Salem’s first family. This would make their baby a legacy character.
Soaps don’t usually go around killing these types of characters because they’re how you set up future story. This baby could have provided fodder in any number of ways in the short term too.
For instance, if Lani and JJ (Casey Moss) reunited, the baby would be a constant reminder of her cheating. JJ would have to fight any negative feelings he had about the baby who turned out not to be his.
If they didn’t reunite, the baby could have been the catalyst for how Lani and Eli eventually fall in love and try to raise their child together. Or if they were to go their separate ways, the baby could have caused a nasty custody battle.
But with no baby comes no story. Sure, both families will mourn, but that’s not exactly a joy for millions of mothers who watch the soap. Seeing a child die is every parent’s worst nightmare and not exactly considered entertainment.
While there wasn’t much of a rooting factor for this baby, is its death even going to be that impactful to warrant this story development?
The little one was not wanted by its mother and instead was seen as an obstacle to the relationship she really wanted. Eli was ready to let JJ believe he was the father.
While both came around to the idea of being parents, it feels awfully strange to end this story right now. Hopefully, DAYS has something up its sleeve to make all this sadness be worth it.
Days of our Lives (DOOL) airs weekdays on NBC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
