He’s a DiMera, so is dead really dead? Especially on Days of Our Lives, and especially playing characters who have come back from the dead so many times? Well, let’s find out.
Soap Hub caught up with Thaao Penglis on the Daytime Emmy Awards red carpet, and he answered that burning question in fans’ minds… while wondering why he keeps dying.
The actor, who has been off and on DAYS since 1981, has certainly had a challenge over these last few years, trying to make a villainous character like Andre likable.
Considering the outcry when Andre was killed a few months ago, it’s a pretty safe bet to say he was successful.
Andre had won the heart of Kate (Lauren Koslow), and they were just beginning to have a real marriage when he lost his life, supposedly at the hands of Abigail (Marci Miller).
Fans hate to think that she killed him and continue to hope it’s not true, thus setting the stage for an Andre return.
“The reason characters exist and have lasted very long in serial form is because a writer looks at a character and thinks there’s more to tell,” Penghlis told Soap Hub.
“So, I think I attribute all my journeys in life as part of the reason why my characters have lasted. I don’t know why they like to kill me off,” he laughed.
The actor mused about how some characters go upstairs for a few years and then come back down, but that never seems to happen to his characters. “It’s like they want to finish me off and they regret it,” he smiled.
“I’m sure I’ll be back,” he added, with a hint of mischief in his eyes. Here’s hoping his prediction happens soon. Salem just isn’t the same without him.
