It was way back in 1996 when the chemistry between Days of our Lives stars Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans gave birth to the love story of Patch and Kayla, one of the biggest supercouples in daytime history.
The two characters have fought their way back to each other numerous times over the decades, battling super villains, kidnappings, amnesia, and even death, but their love has always come out a winner.
Nichols and Evans have stayed close through all these years and are great friends, and often get together to host videos for their fans.
The couple recently posted a fun video on Instagram, recounting one of the early scenes between Patch and Kayla, when their love story was just beginning.
“Here’s the first clip of our little watch party,” Nichols posted on Instagram. “[Mary Beth Evans] is adorable, Kayla is forward and Patch doesn’t stand a chance.”
The video starts with some playful banter about Evans’ hair, with Nichols telling her, “You look adorable today.” Then they pressed play on the clip, and we watched them watching this special moment between Patch and Kayla.
“Look at my baby,” Nichols smiled as he watched. The scene saw Kayla inviting Steve in for some coffee or a beer, but he’s pulling away despite her insistence. “I was so forward,” Evans remarked while watching.
As Kayla continued to pressure Steve to stay, offering him a sandwich, he came back, “I’m hungry baby, but not for food.” And when this set her back a bit, he noted, “You can dish it out, but you can’t take it.”
Patch worries about being the man to spoil all her sweetness, but Kayla calls him afraid, and the two move in on a passionate kiss.
“That’s a lot of smacking right there,” Nichols said, commenting on the clip. “You’re a tough customer. Here I am trying to do something good once in my life, and you won’t let me.”
After the clip, Evans talked about how after the two actors had been gone from DAYS for about 15 years, someone sent them a clip package of all their moments and they weren’t sure they wanted to watch but were glad they did. “This couple had it going on,” she said. “It was a great matchup.”
Nichols added, “Good times, we were so lucky.” Days of our Lives (DOOL) airs weekdays on NBC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
