Soaps’ Iconic Characters: Days of Our Lives’ Roman Brady

The appearance of Roman Brady in Salem and on Days of Our Lives led many in the town to feel safer than they ever did before, particularly Marlena Evans, whom he had been hired to protect from a serial killer that was roaming the streets of Salem.

Roman (Wayne Northrop) and Marlena (Deidre Hall) soon fell in love, and together, worked to foil the diabolical plans of Stefano DiMera. They also soon married.

Stefano (Joseph Mascolo) framed Roman for several murders that were committed by his nephew, Andre DiMera. He later went o the run to prove his innocence, and after showing that Stefano was behind the cover-up, he was promoted to police chief.

Roman later tracked Stefano to a Caribbean island where he found the diabolical murderer suffering from incurable cancer. DiMera was there to collect three mysterious prisms that would unlock a secret formula and cure him of his disease. Roman caught up to him on a cliff, but Stefano pulled a gun. He shot Roman, who seemingly fell to his death.

Bo (Peter Reckell) saw his brother fall off the cliff, but later, realized his brother’s body was gone. Several episodes later, Roman was shown aboard Stefano’s yacht, but fans were left unsure whether he was dead or alive.

A man who called himself John Black (Drake Hogestyn) later appeared in Salem named John Black, and was later revealed to be the presumed-dead Roman Brady. Marlena was thrilled her husband had returned to her.

After Marlena was presumed dead, Roman fell in love with Isabella Toscano, but soon learned he really was John Black, as the real Roman was still alive.

After Isabella’s untimely death, John turned to Marlena for comfort and they had an affair that resulted in the birth of a daughter, Isabella “Belle” Brady. Roman realized the depths of Marlena’s love for John and he left town brokenhearted.

Roman (now-Josh Taylor) returned once again after being exposed to biological warfare while on a deep-cover ISA mission in South America. The cure for his ailment was discovered by John, Hope, and Stefano during a jungle mission engineered to drive John and Marlena apart.

Roman was “killed” again during the Salem Stalker Murders in December 2003 during his wedding reception to Kate Roberts (Lauren Koslow). Later, he turned up on the island of Melaswen (New Salem) with the other from the Salem Stalker victims.

Today Roman is a Days of Our Lives police commander and ranking detective on the Salem police force. After an ill-fated marriage to Kate Roberts, he has remained single and friendly with his ex-wife Marlena.
