Soap Hub Performer of the Week is an ongoing series of articles in which an editor pays tribute to one performer from each show who was outstanding. For Days of our Lives, Lucas Adams broke our heart as he learned several truths and couldn’t escape one more.

Lucas Adams Breaks Our Heart

It was a bewildering week for Steve’s (Stephen Nichols) outcast son. Not the child born of his love with Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) but rather from that horrible Ava Vitali (Tamara Braun) already put Tripp behind the eightball of life in Salem. But his father and his wife have both tried to be there for and embrace him as a part of their family.

But Tripp thought that would include believing him when he told him he wasn’t the guy responsible for raping Allie (Lindsay Arnold) and he certainly wasn’t the father of her son, Henry. Yet he refused to let Kayla have a sample of his DNA to run a paternity test because he was offended that his word wasn’t good enough. What he didn’t know was the test was run behind his back.

Tripp found out at the worst possible moment — he had just poured out his heart to one of his first loves, Ciara (Victoria Konefal), at her grave. It was made all the more poignant when he recalled how hurt she was when she told him about her own experience with sexual assault and he swore he would never do something like that. Enter Allie — bewildered that he took the DNA test.

Tripp was adamant that he did no such thing, which made far more sense to Allie since why would he be willing to incriminate himself? Lucas Adams had to walk a tightrope of proclaiming his character’s innocence without appearing like a complete jerk in the process and he pulled this off like a seasoned pro. This isn’t easy material but it was in his talented hands.

Things got more complicated when both reunited at the hospital to hear the results. Poor Tripp was feeling betrayed by not just Kayla, but when his own father said he was the one who turned over his DNA, it was a complete betrayal. But Tripp didn’t even get the time to process that before he was told the foundation-rocking news — he indeed was a DNA match.

Adams did a masterful job of displaying all of the various emotions that washed over Tripp — betrayal, shock, horror, and utter confusion since he stuck to his original story that he was just doing a good deed of making sure this drunk girl got home safely!

Of course, sometimes no good deed goes unpunished but in this murky storyline of he said/she said, Adams — and the audience — come out the winner. Days of our Lives (DOOL) airs weekdays on NBC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
