In the May 8 episode of Days of Our Lives, Rita somehow managed to become both the funniest and most unsettling person in Salem. What started with little jokes about Boca retirement plans slowly turned into something far creepier once she was standing beside EJ while he casually discussed experimenting on human beings like he was organizing a wine tasting. The longer Rita hangs around the DiMera madness, the clearer it becomes that she is not just an assistant anymore. She’s becoming part of the machinery.

Key Takeaways

  • Rita’s cheerful personality suddenly feels much darker around EJ’s resurrection plans.
  • EJ casually revealed there are more “patients” available for experimentation.
  • Leo accidentally uncovered more DiMera secrets while spying with binoculars.
  • Lexie’s shocking return blew apart the DiMera family gathering.

What Happened on DAYS

Friday leaned hard into gothic soap territory, and Rita (Maggie Carney) stood right in the middle of it, wearing sensible clothes and talking about elevating the DiMera estate instead of merely running it. Early in the episode, she joked about hoping Stefano (the late Joe Mascolo) did not leave everything to Dr. Rolf (Richard Wharton), while dropping references to Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant, as if Salem suddenly wandered into an old black-and-white comedy for five minutes. Then the mood shifted fast.

EJ (Dan Feuerriegel) chillingly told Rita they had “no shortage of patients to experiment on,” which should raise red flags. Rita barely blinking at it somehow made the line worse. Anna (Leann Hunley) later added fuel to the fire by mentioning Rita always had designs on Tony (Thaao Penghlis). Because apparently, this woman has been quietly orbiting every dangerous DiMera situation possible.

Everything exploded by the end when Lexie (Nikki Crawford) walked through the secret door right after the will reading, and every person in the room saw her. No dream sequence or shadowy tease. Just full resurrection chaos.

Why It Matters

Rita works because she does not behave like a traditional soap villain. She sounds practical. Funny. Slightly annoyed most of the time. That makes her involvement in all this resurrection business deeply uncomfortable because she treats horrifying things like routine office tasks. Dr. Rolf at least looks like a mad scientist. Rita looks like somebody who reminds you about payroll while helping conceal human experiments downstairs.

The really creepy part is how embedded she has become in the DiMera legacy. She has worked for Stefano, EJ, Kristen (Stacy Haiduk), and half the rotating chaos agents in that mansion. She’s tased people, managed secret prisoners, handled cover-ups, and now casually stands beside EJ as Lexie is resurrected. At some point, Rita stopped being comic relief and quietly became Salem’s most dependable henchwoman.

The Fallout

Now that Lexie revealed herself publicly, Rita may become even more dangerous because she already knows how the machine works. She understands where the bodies are buried, possibly literally in Salem’s case, and she never panics. That calmness feels different now after hearing EJ discuss additional “patients” waiting for experimentation. Suddenly, the possibility that Abby, Stefan, Jake (both Brandon Barash), or someone else being secretly preserved somewhere does not sound impossible anymore.

And honestly, Rita might be scarier than EJ at this point because he still behaves emotionally. Rita does not. She adapts. She cleans up messes. And she keeps the operation moving. Salem has always had masterminds, but Rita is turning into something else entirely: the smiling office manager of a science-fiction nightmare who probably still remembers to water the plants before helping with a resurrection plot.
