Sonny and Paul finally reconnect and make love on Days of Our Lives, but there’s one thing – actually, one person – standing in the way of the reunited couple’s total happiness: Deimos (of course).
“There’s always been love there between Sonny and Paul,” says Freddie Smith. “Now they’ve fallen in love, again, and they want to be together.”
A Cloud Over Their Happiness
So all’s well with world, right? Not exactly. Deimos’ (Vincent Irizarry) presence continues to hover over the pair like a dark cloud; specifically, Sonny’s vehement hatred toward his evil uncle and how he’s handled being at the helm of the Kiriakis empire. It’s going to have an effect on Sonny and Paul moving forward.
“It scares Paul,” explains Smith. “He’s known Sonny for a very long time. He’s know him intimately, romantically and on every level. Paul has never seen this side of Sonny before. It’s something that catches him off guard.”
“It’s definitely going to put a strain on Paul and Sonny’s relationship, in the sense that Paul has learned about a different side of Sonny. I think that’s the biggest strain, just this disconnect. Paul is going to keep on trying to reel Sonny back in, but Sonny has got his mind set on saving his family.”
Deimos Makes A Move
Things intensify when Deimos (Vincent Irizarry) makes his next move, and it’s targeted directly at Sonny. He demotes Sonny at Titan. Needless to say, Sonny is furious and he’s more determined than ever to destroy Deimos.
Is any part of Sonny torn between preserving his relationship with Paul (Christopher Sean) and annihilating Deimos to save his family?
A Man Obsessed
“I’d like to say yes,” shares Smith with a chuckle. “Although Sonny cares about Paul deeply, he kind of gets a little obsessed with taking Deimos down. It almost trumps everything. Sonny ends up putting his relationship with his partner on the back burner.”
How far Sonny will ultimately go remains to be seen, but Smith is totally open to his character taking things to the limit. In fact, he welcomes Sonny turning ruthless if that’s what it takes.

“As long as it’s rooted in being rational in the sense that Sonny is not going to start killing random people or do anything crazy,” says Smith. “I think Sonny will take things to whatever level is necessary to make sure Deimos goes down.
“For me, that’s been the biggest thing,” asserts Smith. “I’ve been looking at the scripts and thinking, ‘How far can we take this?’ I’ve been working really close with the directors and executive producers on that. They’ve even said to me, ‘Just go for it.’”
A Man In Charge
And Smith has been. He promises that fans are going to see “venom” seething from his character.
“There are moments where you’ll go, ‘Whoa! He’s not a kid anymore,’” he recounts. “Because that’s one of the things that Deimos taunts him about, and it only pisses Sonny off more. Sonny’s definitely going to be changing and taking charge.
“I’m really excited about it,” admits Smith. “Sonny is showing growth, which is fun to play and watch. I mean, just as an actor to be able to be this aggressive and relentless… There are consequences to behaving like this in real life. So you never really want to tap into that, even though you may feel it on certain occasions. As a real person you can’t always act on that, because there are repercussions. But as an actor you can let it all out. They yell, ‘Cut!’ and nothing happens.”
