Deimos needs to be stopped and taken down, and Sonny vows to be the man to do it on Days of Our Lives.
“Sonny’s craving the power and really wants to make things right with the family,” says actor Freddie Smith. “So he wants to go after Deimos.”
Young and Hungry
And Sonny’s not about to let the fact that he’s “the baby” of the Kiriakis clan stop him
“It’s kind of amazing that the youngest one is taking the bull by the horns, if you will, and making it happen,” notes Smith. “But no one else really wants to do it. Sonny’s dad is happy with his work. Brady (Eric Martsolf) doesn’t really have interest in running the family. Sonny notices that and wants to take the leadership position.”
Smith kind of saw the move coming. “It was eluded to,” he contends. “You knew Sonny was going to hit a breaking point. Being kidnapped and beaten was the final straw. It was like, Okay. Enough is enough. Now it’s time to take matters into my own hands.
Man with A Plan
Sonny, who’s always been a strategic thinker, has a plan. He tells Paul (Christopher Sean) he needs to find incriminating evidence against his diabolical uncle. Once he does, Sonny’s sure he’ll be able to put an end to Deimos’ freewheeling reign of terror once and for all.
Smith acknowledges that he’s always hoped his character would one day take over the Kiriakis empire. “Absolutely,” he declares. “I wanted it to even happen sooner, but now that I look back it would have been kind of ridiculous for a 23-year-old to run Titan. It would have been unrealistic. The fact that I’m approaching 30… Now it makes sense. It is just the perfect timing, and I kind of grew into it as a person.
As my character grew, it was exactly what was happening in my personal life. It was very easy to pull from being young, when I started on the show. And now, having grown up, it’s easy to be in this leadership position.

A Big Challenge
Tackling this story turn is a challenge Smith is looking forward to. “I’m excited about it,” he says. “For me, tapping into aggression or dominance is… I wouldn’t say is easy, but it is accessible.”
Yet, it is a big change from the nice good guy Sonny has always been. Smith sees the correlation between what’s happening to his character and what happened to Michael Corleone The Godfather.
“One of the first conversations that I had [when I came back to the show] was about Michael Corleone,” shares Smith. “I kind of new that was the direction we were going. I just didn’t know at what point it would actually happen. Now that it’s here, it’s been a lot of fun. And what’s airing right now is just the tip of the iceberg. It’s going to get crazy.”
A New Sonny
Viewers are going to get to see another side of Sonny in the months ahead; a side that has been lying dormant inside of him and is finally ready to surface.
“Yeah, definitely,” confirms Smith. “It’s almost like it gets away from him in a way. There’s kind of going to be a shift, in general, in the character. Sonny’s going to be in this place that he’s never really experienced before and he’s really going to run with it. He’s going to find out that he really kind of likes the power.”
