Yes, Ben Weston is a serial killer and murdered three women and thought he murdered a fourth person back in 2015 on Days of Our Lives (DOOL), but since when does being a serial killer on a soap mean you can’t be redeemed?
Since this IS a soap and not real life, there are some things we just have to accept. Andre DiMera was a serial killer, and his reign of terror over Salem lasted decades, not just…months.
Yet, when he was murdered (again, as he’s been dead several times cause this is a soap), Gabi was sent to Statesville, yet the real culprit, Abby, got off scot-free…due to, yes, mental illness.
So, now DAYS has decided to redeem Ben for reasons. One, he is a dynamic character and two, Robert Scott Wilson just does something for the character that makes us want to see him more – a lot more. And mental illness is how DAYS is redeeming this character.
We already knew he was an abused child, both emotionally and physically, so his illness is not even a retcon. He had the history already and it just fit.
And yes, there are some fans and soap critics who just refuse to accept this character can be redeemed, and become part of an actual popular couple.
Since we just finished Andre’s murder story with a mentally ill woman as the murderer, why is there a problem here? After all, the same mentally ill woman had a rapist as a father. And, yes, he sure was redeemed.
Nice, kind Tripp, who unwittingly sent Ciara off on that motorcycle tried to kill Kayla last year. And Kayla’s husband? He started his run in Salem as a thug who held Hope captive and left a bottle of acid above her, threatening to disfigure her forever.
But then he became our hero, Steve Johnson, and has been for decades. And, part of a supercouple. So, why can’t Ben become a hero (and one who understandably has to take medication to regulate his moods) and Ciara be the woman who truly redeems him?
The chemistry between Robert Scott Wilson and Victoria Konefal is palpable. The story of two broken characters is classic soap, as was the way they were thrown together.
This is working and it’s working like magic, like all soap couples should. There is nothing forced between Ciara and Ben. It’s everything we’ve wanted and everything we’ve been missing.
If we accepted Andre, accepted Steve, accepted Jack, and even accepted Abigail (and countless others), then why can’t we just accept Ben, revel in what these two performers can do and sit back and enjoy it?
Days of our Lives (DOOL) airs weekdays on NBC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
