On Days of our Lives, Sarah decided to keep quiet about Philip forging the codicil from Victor, claiming that his father wanted him to run Titan because, as Philip rationalized, that’s what Victor would have wanted if Philip weren’t suffering from mental illness at the time. After all, you don’t want to punish Philip for being mentally ill, do you? The judge bought that argument. Stephanie bought that argument. Even Sarah bought that argument. (Also, she wanted Philip to keep Xander’s worst instincts in check, but that’s a different issue.) The only problem with that argument is: if we’re supposed to forgive Philip for doing horrible things because it wasn’t evil or malice or spite or jealousy — it was mental illness — then why not everybody else in Salem, too?
Southern Fried Killer
Clyde (ex-James Read, who recently exited DAYS) killed Abigail (ex-Marci Miller). He abused his son, Ben (Robert Scott Wilson), and his stepdaughter, Jordan (ex-Chrishell Stause). He kidnapped Cat’s (AnnaLynne McCord) mother and blackmailed Cat and Mark (Jonah Robinson) into trying to murder Chad (Billy Flynn). He went to jail for his crimes. Why? Why isn’t he excused for being mentally ill? You’d have to be mentally ill to do all that, no?
Girl Interrupted
Megan (Miranda Wilson) kidnapped Bo (Peter Reckell), put him into deep freeze, and did a lot of other terrible things. Why isn’t she excused for being mentally ill? After all, her father took her baby away from her when she was a teenager. That could drive anybody crazy. If we forgive Philip (John-Paul Lavoisier) because he had a sad childhood, why not Megan?

Mother Bear
Leo’s (Greg Rikaart) and Tate’s (Leo Howard) mothers are both in jail. Diana (ex-Judith Chapman) tried to kill Marlena (Deidre Hall) because she wanted John (the late Drake Hogysten) for herself. You know, the way Philip tried to frame Brady (Eric Marstolf) by faking his own death because he wanted Chloe (ex-Nadia Bjorlin)? And Theresa (ex-Emily O’Brien) is also behind bars because she forged papers that made it look like Alex was Victor’s (the late John Aniston) heir instead of Xander (Paul Telfer). That is a lot less than what Philip did. So, if he can be forgiven for his temporary insanity, why not Theresa, whose insanity was even more temporary?
The Big Bad
And then there’s Stefano (the late Joseph Mascolo). The dude did things only a crazy person would do. Why is he a villain, and Philip gets a pass? Shouldn’t the Get Out of Jail card be available to all?
