Susan Seaforth Hayes has reached out to the many fans of her and her husband Bill Hayes in light of his passing earlier this month, thanking them for their support. Now, the Days of our Lives actress is opening up more about the man she loved both on and off screen for over 50 years.
“The last scene I got to play with him is about how much we love each other,” Seaforth Hayes told the New York Times, “and I was blessed with an opportunity to hover over the words ‘Have I ever told you how much I love you?’ And Doug answers, ‘No, you never did.’ That was something Billy and I would say frequently in life.”
DAYS tapes several months in advance so watch for Bill Hayes to appear as Doug throughout the first half of this year and into July. The last episode date was revealed by a good friend of the family, Amy Shaughnessy on X. “We filmed this scene on December 13th. Bill’s last air date is set to air on July 11th…Susan’s birthday,” she wrote.
The show will most likely write Hayes’s passing into the script as it has done with many other beloved favorites including John Aniston, who played Victor Kiriakis.
Bill and Susan Hayes wed in real life in 1974 but Doug and Julie didn’t tie the knot until 1976. The couple’s onscreen wedding was shown in the wedding segment of the 1994 primetime CBS special 50 Years of Soaps. The couple’s wit and affection for one another made their way into the program.
On the topic of their favorite scene, Hayes teased to Seaforth Hayes it must have been the time that Doug wed Addie (Patricia Barry), Julie’s mother. “No, darling,” Seaforth Hayes replied. Hayes playfully shot out a few more stories, including when Doug’s past as a con artist was revealed and when Julie’s face was burned in a fire. “No, no, no,” Seaforth Hayes insisted. Then what was their favorite? “The time you married me,” Seaforth Hayes said to her on and off-screen husband. “Of course,” Hayes said with a twinkle in his eye. “We all knew that ahead of time.”
