Sophia managed to survive Kristen, disappear for months, reinvent herself as a waitress named Amelia, and pick up a Southern accent somewhere along the way. Now Rachel Boyd is back on Days of our Lives, and she made it clear that Sophia is not returning as the same girl Salem remembers. Boyd opened up about saying goodbye to the character, coming back with a new approach, and why Sophia’s survival may be the beginning of an even messier chapter.

Key Takeaways

  • Rachel Boyd said she only wanted Sophia to return if the story felt meaningful.
  • Boyd used her time away to reset after the emotional demands of playing Sophia.
  • Sophia returns stronger, more independent, and less focused on Holly and Tate.
  • Boyd teased that Sophia’s survival will bring plenty of chaos back to Salem.

Rachel Boyd Wanted Sophia’s Return to Mean Something

Boyd spoke to TV Insider about leaving Days of our Lives after Sophia was presumed dead and not knowing whether she would ever return. She said she treated those final scenes as a real ending because there were no guarantees. “I only wanted to reopen the story if I felt it was meaningful and necessary,” Boyd explained.

That break mattered to her. Boyd admitted playing Sophia had been emotionally demanding, especially because viewers reacted so strongly to the character. She eventually stopped reading online reactions so she could focus on her own performance instead of trying to keep up with everyone else’s opinion of Sophia.

She even made a little memorial for the character after leaving the show, complete with flowers, cast and crew letters, and a homemade tombstone on the back of a takeout box. That is commitment to closure. Unfortunately for Sophia, Salem rarely respects a funeral for very long.

Sophia Choi Is Coming Back Stronger

Boyd said she wanted the returning Sophia to feel different after surviving Kristen’s (Stacy Haiduk) attack and living in hiding for six months. “I wanted her to come back stronger than ever,” she said. “Now that she’s survived a near-death experience and kept herself alive and hidden for six months, this version of Sophia is going to be much more independent and a fighter.”

That also means Sophia may not immediately fall back into her old obsession with Holly (Ashley Puzemis) and Tate (Leo Howard). Boyd said those relationships still matter to Sophia, but revenge and getting Tate to love her are no longer her main motivations. Her strange new connection with Kristen may matter more, especially since Boyd believes the two women now need each other.

Boyd was not giving away exactly where the story goes next, but she offered one warning that pretty much covers it. “I can’t say exactly what is going to happen, but as long as Sophia’s alive, chaos will follow!” Considering Sophia survived being hit with a rock and dumped in the water, Salem probably should not expect her second act to be peaceful.
