Like her Days of our Lives character, Kate Roberts, Lauren Koslow has a deep love of family. That caring nature extended to the actress’s four-legged family members, too. Sadly, Koslow had to say goodbye to her devoted dog, whom she named after the late movie star Rita Hayworth.
Koslow began her Instagram post with a quote from Mary Oliver, a poet: “To live in this world, you must be able to do three things: to love what is mortal; to hold it against your bones knowing your own life depends on it; and, when the time comes to let it go, to let it go.”
“Sadly,” the actress continued, “we say goodbye to Rita Hayworth, our flaming-haired fox with the valiant heart. Our beloved Rita has gone on to her next adventure. Sweet girl, I imagine you running on four straight, strong legs with your OG pack — Fergie, Boomer, Harry & Indiana. Thank you for staying with us for as long as you possibly could — thank you for letting us know when you needed to go.
“Rita was [a] survivor — just to walk was a balancing act,” Koslow shared, “but her mighty presence was such that the rest of the pack respected & gave her special status from her first-day #onthefarm. Special needs dogs bring out the best in you — the caregiver & loving protector; towards the end of her life — Rita needed extra help — to keep her eating, to help her walk, to replace her narrowing activities with new ones & to just be there And fully in the moment for her. Ongoing support for senior dogs takes acts of selflessness but rewards by making you a better human in those moments, one with a bigger heart and a kinder soul. I’m grateful.
“Rita, we will miss you forever and a day,” Koslow wrote. “Our home seems empty without your presence — I know that will change. I know we will rescue another dog in your honor, but for now, we grieve for you. I remember first sighting you at the county animal shelter — making a scene, jumping over the backs of your fellow cage mates with your three-legged hops, barking — demanding to be seen — And you were. Our lives are better for it. Always & forever in our hearts.”
Koslow received support from social media pals, including Kristian Alfonso (Hope), who wrote; I am so sorry.” Added Roberta Palumbo: “Lauren, I am so touched by your beautiful tribute to Rita. And I am so terribly sorry for the loss of your precious baby. She lived a wonderful second chapter of life because of the love you and your family gave her. May all your sweet memories bring you peace and comfort.”
Soap Hub adds sincere condolences to Koslow and her family at this difficult time.
