On Days of Our Lives, Doug III had a few strikes against him when he first arrived in Salem. Julie had just lost her Doug, and this guy had the exact same name as him. It was odd. Then he stole a priceless necklace from The Hortons that had just been unearthed in a time capsule. This guy was on our list — and not one of the good ones.
Road to Redemption
We weren’t impressed when it was revealed that Doug (Peyton Meyer) stole the necklace to pay off debts he had accrued. And while he seemed a little conflicted, he wasn’t conflicted enough to do the right thing.
In fact, he would have these emotional conversations with Julie (Susan Seaforth Hayes), yet keep this awful secret from her the whole time. She gave him a place to stay and what did he do in return? He stole from her and lied to her. And he let her believe her brother had stolen the necklace. The brother who had claimed he had changed.

On top of that, he had Leo (Greg Rikaart) work his connections and fence the necklace. An additional insult happened when Stark successfully sold it but for nowhere near its value. It wasn’t even enough for him to pay off his entire debt. When the thugs he owed the money to beat the heck out of him, we weren’t sympathetic at all.
But you know who was sympathetic? Holly (Ashley Puzemis). She met Doug III, and they connected. With each scene, he finally started to morph into an actual human being. However, at this point, we were still suspicious and skeptical that New Doug could ever be redeemed.

He Does Have a Heart
When Holly helped Doug pay off the remainder of his debt, things started to take a turn. She made up a lie, got money out of Maggie (Suzanne Rogers), and gave it to Doug. Later, she showed up at the park because she felt he needed somebody to have his back. She also mouthed off at the thug in defense of Doug. And he looked truly scared that this guy could cause trouble in the future.
In addition, he called Leo, aka Mr. Stark, and wanted to talk to him about the necklace. He hoped to get it back to Julie. It was the first time his guilt and conflict hit home for us. There’s still a long way to go. The necklace isn’t in Julie’s possession as of now. And we know when she finds out about him, she’s going to be supremely hurt.

It will be painful to watch the drama whenever this secret is revealed. However, if there is some sort of fallout between Julie and Doug III, we won’t only feel bad for Julie and The Hortons. We’ll also feel bad for Doug. His friendship with Holly is helping us care about him. We have a feeling redemption is in his future.
