Here’s Why Belle and Shawn’s Marriage Ended on the December 4 Days of Our Lives

Belle and Shawn ended their marriage on the Wednesday, December 4 episode of Days of Our Lives. After all, they have barely seen each other since Shawn entered rehab and allowed guilt to take over his life. But that wasn’t the only reason the high school sweethearts decided to get divorced…again.

End of an Era

Belle (Martha Madison) and Shawn (Brandon Beemer) were very civil as they reconnected at Marlena (Deidre Hall) and John’s (the late Drake Hogestyn) place. It was all very matter-of-fact. They had a lengthy discussion about their marriage and what went wrong. And even though they both admitted they still loved each other, love wasn’t enough to keep their connection alive.

Obviously, Shawn still felt like he was drowning under the weight of his guilt. However, he said he was working on that with a therapist. He updated Belle on Bo’s situation, saying he may be coming out of the coma.

But it felt like Shawn’s guilt has morphed into something bigger. Maybe self-loathing? It wasn’t long before Shawn told his wife that he didn’t deserve her. He admitted that even if he got past the tremendous guilt, he didn’t think he’d ever be the same man he was, the man she fell in love with.

And it wasn’t just about what he did to his father. It’s the pain he and Belle caused each other and the damage they both did to their marriage. Shawn referred to everything that happened with Talia (Aketra Sevillian), Jan (Heather Lindell), and EJ (Dan Feuerriegel). This has resulted in a disconnection of sorts.

Shawn explained that they had been apart for the better part of last year. However, it wasn’t just a physical separation; their closeness and trust in each other were gone. Subsequently, they both decided to call it quits on their marriage. Belle would draw up a simple set of divorce papers, and that was all she wrote. It was all very sad and heartbreaking.
