Days of Our Lives fans have heard the name Catherina for about a year and a half. Konstantin used the “death” of his daughter to seek revenge on John Black, aka The Pawn, who allegedly killed her. He didn’t. Then, after Konstantin kicked the bucket, her name started popping up again when Cat Greene came on the scene. So it’s no surprise that DAYS has finally cast its Catherina, who’s alive and tangled up in Clyde’s web. Actress Susan Elena Matus debuted on the soap today.

The Early Days
According to her website, Susan Elena Matus grew up in San Francisco. “Her father was a dance teacher from Nicaragua, while her mother once a rodeo queen, is of Danish descent.”
Matus graduated from the Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, where she earned the Charles Jehlinger Award. The award honors the memory of one of the school’s most notable Directors of Instruction. Matus is in good company. Previous recipients of the award include Robert Redford, Grace Kelly, Anne Hathaway, and Jessica Chastain.
Her Personal Life
She has been married to veteran actor Michael Irby since 2005. They met in acting school. Irby has a long list of amazing credits that include Mayans, M.C., Barry, the current season of Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer, The Unit, and the big-screen blockbuster Fast Five, which is one of the best films in the Fast and Furious franchise.
Earlier this year, on National Couples Day, Matus posted about her husband and their family. “Thank you for almost 30 years of all the love, laughter, growth, late night adventures, and all the ups and downs that have built our foundation. Thank you for listening. Thank you for sharing in the care and love of our amazing son. Wouldn’t have wanted to do it without you babe. Here’s to leaving the light on. ‘Cause it’s just the simple things.”
Her Career
In addition to acting, Matus writes, directs, and produces. In 2015, she created an award-winning short film, Waiting for You, which premiered at Los Angeles’ Dances with Films. She also won Best Drama Short and Best Woman Filmmaker at the Holywood International Moving Pictures Film Festival.
The actress had a recurring role on CBS’s The Unit, a show her husband also starred in. She appeared in seven episodes over three seasons.
Matus posted her excitement for joining DAYS on Instagram where she explained Catherina’s motivation: “Catherina a survivor with complicated family secrets will protect her children at all cost.”
