Similar to the shocking news of Kelly Monaco’s discharge from General Hospital, the news of Brandon Barash being written out of Days of Our Lives blindsided him. The show films so far in advance that he knew about being let go nearly eight months ago, but he kept quiet about it. Now that his exit is imminent, Monday, October 28, he opened up about how it happened.
In a video interview with Soaps.com, Barash — who plays Stefan on DAYS — confirmed that his departure will happen soon. “He will be exiting, I don’t know, sometime before Halloween,” he stated. When asked whose decision it was to let him go, he said, “I was in the middle of a contract, and it was the writers’ decision.” He explained he was surprised by that decision.
“I finished some scenes one day. Some pretty emotional scenes with Cherie (Jimenez, Gabi),” he further explained, noting that the scenes were after Connie (Julie Dove) had set off a bomb in the DiMera mansion and Gabi landed in the hospital. In those scenes, Stefan tells his wife that he is filing for divorce. After finishing the scenes, which he was proud of, he was called into his boss’ office. There, he was informed that he would be leaving the show.

“I knew exactly what was happening as soon as I was called up to her office,” he remarked. The boss said that it wasn’t her doing or in any way related to Barash and his performances. “We know your work ethic is very high,” they said, adding, “But it’s just where we’re deciding to take the character.” Despite the bad news, he got excited about future possibilities, stating, “So this door is closing, [but] some other door over here is gonna open, and I’m really excited to see what’s behind that other door.”
Even though he felt like someone had punched him in the gut and his ego had taken a beating, he still “walked out of the office equal parts shocked and excited about what was around the corner.” Feeling the universe was telling him he wasn’t supposed to be at DAYS, Barash was thrilled to see what would happen next. He explained that this all occurred early in March but was happy to have had the subsequent time to spend with his son in the child’s first year, as well as quality time with the rest of his family.
Fans will be sad to see him go but will follow him to his next project, and we’re excited to see what that will be.
