Daytime newcomer Madelyn Kientz is expanding the teen scene on Days of our Lives. The actress is set to make her debut next week as Sophia, a friend of Holly’s. Kientz is talking to Soap Hub exclusively about joining the Peacock drama.

Sophia’s Choice

“It’s been a crazy ride, and so much fun,” Kientz says. “I’m having a great time.” The actress said she hoped it was a good omen when she first read for her DAYS role on her birthday. “It seemed like a nice coincidence, which was a cool thing to have happen.”

Just who is Sophia? “She’s friends with Holly [Ashley Puzemis],” Kientz sets up. “They’ve been friends since they were kids. Sophia will interact with Tate [Leo Howard], too.” The actress describes her Salem alter-ego as both “determined and ambitious.” She adds, “As time goes on and we see more of her, I’m hoping viewers will fall in love with her as much as I have.”

If Sophia is as trustworthy as Kientz is, she’ll become Salem’s best secret-keeper. The actress has been taping at the show for months but because of the show’s production schedule, she’s not going to air until early next week.

“Until now, only my mom has known,” Kientz says. “I’ve been with the show for a while, and we’ve gotten through quite a bit of material. I’m very excited my first airdate is coming up. Friends know that I’ve been working on something, but I haven’t said which show it is.”

Coming onto a show that’s nearing 60 years can be daunting, but Kientz says that she was made to feel welcomed to the program right away. “I was able to ask what was going on in the story prior to my coming on,” she says. “I am a little bit nervous to see what viewers will have to say about Sophia. I love reading predictions that viewers make [on social media] about what’s going to happen next.”

Kientz gives a big shoutout to co-stars Puzemis and Howard for giving her the daytime rundown. “I feel very safe and comfortable,” she says.

It turns out the actress was able to get some Salem scoop from her real-life family. “My mom and my dad actually used to watch the show right after they graduated from college,” Kientz says. “They watched religiously. After I got the audition, my mom said, ‘I know this show!'”

Kientz was on the DAYS set for the show’s recent 15,000th episode taping press event/celebration. Because her casting hadn’t been announced yet, she was able to be a bit incognito. “I got to meet some of the actors who hadn’t been on the show recently but are coming back,” she says. “And I got to meet some of the writers. It’s so exciting to be a part of something so huge. I was really grateful to be there.”
