Deidre Hall, The Pawn, John and Marlena
A couple of years ago, Days of our Lives revisited its Marlena devil possession storyline. Well, the streaming soap is, once again, revisiting one of its greatest hits, and it also involves Deidre Hall’s iconic character. After all, in one of Marlena’s husband’s many lives and incarnations, he was The Pawn. Yes, John Black is dangerously close to disappearing down that rabbit hole again.
The legend of The Pawn started in the mid-’80s before John Black (Drake Hogestyn) was even John Black. Back then, the Pawn was used in the war between villainous titans Victor Kiriakis (the late John Aniston) and Stefano DiMera (the late Joseph Mascolo). In the present day, Konstantin Kiriakis (John Kapelos) is the man who puts two and two together and decides to use The Pawn to his advantage before getting his revenge on the man who allegedly killed his daughter.
“Konstantin has sort of mind-controlled him a bit,” Deidre Hall recently told Soap Opera Digest. “But John does go off on a mission to clear his name in Greece. So, there is a tale to all this that goes on a bit.”
Over the years, John’s had to deal with multiple aliases and a past that tended to be chaotic and complex. “I always wonder how far we’ll take it because when you lose ‘John,’ it can be a slippery slope,” Hall explained. “When you see him as somebody else, it’s sort of like, ‘Wait, what?'”
According to the actress who celebrated 5000 episodes of DAYS last year, this Pawn storyline takes John in a different direction than predicted. “But he remains as John. Well, for most of it.”
Once again, Marlena will have to act as an anchor for John. They’re always there to support and ground each other, after all. “She says, ‘I know who you are. The rest of this doesn’t matter because I know the man that you are inside and underneath. You’re good, and you’re solid, and you’re kind,” Hall previewed.
