The Days of our Lives spoilers teased a missing Chanel, and immediately, theories bubbled and bounced around on social media. In the Tuesday, April 16 episode, she disappeared in the springtime snowstorm only to be rescued on Wednesday, April 17. Case closed. Not exactly how we saw this playing out.

The Expectation

The second the missing Chanel (Raven Bowens) spoiler hit the press, we were excited. A married Johnny (Carson Boatman) and Chanel were heading out on a honeymoon. After supporting Paulina (Jackée Harry) through her illnesses and recovery periods, this mini-getaway was the perfect antidote. (Here are the scenes that earned DAYS writers another WGA Award)

It didn’t even matter that their trip would take place at the Horton cabin on Smith Island. They were young, in love, and spending quality time together. What could be better?

As much as Johnny and Chanel deserved alone time to celebrate this next phase of their lives, we knew there would be drama. The whole Chanel goes missing plot point had us wondering how it would go down. The biggest theory (ours anyway) was a fugitive Clyde Weston (James Read) and his sidekick girlfriend — faux Officer Goldman (Christy St. John) — taking Chanel hostage.

Sure, they had already done this with Wendy (Victoria Grace) and Tripp (Lucas Adams), but Clyde’s a bad guy. If Chanel accidentally spotted them out in the wild, they’d need to do something about her. And then we’d see how Johnny and Chanel would get themselves out of this dangerous situation. It’d be the perfect way to showcase a great couple.

The Reality

First, Julie (Susan Seaforth Hayes) suddenly couldn’t handle the chaos and hubbub of life at the Kiriakis mansion. So she accidentally crashed Johnny and Chanel’s honeymoon. She also talked them into bundling up and going out to “play” in the freak snowstorm so she could get some alone time. (Find out about DAYS’ upcoming 15,000th episode here)

And then when Chanel disappeared, for what turned out to be minutes, maybe hours, a radioactive Paulina turned into a superwoman/mama bear to save her child who simply slipped and fell and sprained her ankle. Did we mention Paulina is radioactive? No Clyde Weston in sight. No real danger and intrigue. Just Paulina rushing via snowplow to her daughter’s rescue.

Don’t get us wrong, we love Paulina and Chanel’s mama/daughter connection. But this time, we wanted to see Johnny and Chanel overcome obstacles on their lonesome.

Ultimately, what actually transpired wasn’t near what we brainstormed or imagined. Now, it has us thinking about the purpose of this missing Chanel mini-story arc. Will the fact Mayor Price was radioactive do future damage to the rest of the Horton cabin occupants?

What did you expect from this Johnny and Chanel story? Did the reality live up to the hype? Let us know in the comments.
