It has family drama, concerns life and death issues, and comes with some fantastic acting — everything a Days of Our Lives viewer wants — including controversy!
As baby boomers get older, more and more people have to think about end-of-life issues and DAYS has certainly shined a spotlight on it.
Marlena (Deidre Hall), under advisement from her lawyer daughter, Belle (Martha Madison), was responsible and made legal her wishes in case something happened to her.
The man who’s loved her for decades, John (Drake Hogestyn), is completely freaked out about it and refuses to give up on her. He’s screamed to anyone who would listen that Marlena couldn’t have possibly foreseen this happening when she filed her DNR (do not resuscitate) order.
But that’s exactly what a DNR is for — this exact instance. And Belle understands that, even if she regrets advising her mother to do so. Marlena’s made it clear she did not want extraordinary measures taken if she were near death.
But a DNR is not supposed to be employed if there’s still hope. Does Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) think that Marlena can recover while on the ventilator? Even if the DAYS writers have possibly fudged a bit of reality for this story — who cares?!?! Salem is facing drama of epic proportions and it’s become must-see viewing!
It’s the best material that Hogestyn and Madison have been given in ages — if ever — and both are hitting it out of the park.
Greg Vaughan’s Eric is filled with quiet desperation as he yearns to see everyone’s point of view and also hold it together as his mom slips further away.
Now, it’s still DAYS so we know some crazy things are on the horizon, but the foundation of the story is pure emotional drama — what soaps once did so well but hasn’t demonstrated in ages. Hopefully, Daytime Emmy voters are taking notice.
And hopefully — DAYS and other shows will see how well this is received and give us more of it!
