Will and Sonny finally reunite on Days of Our Lives, but before they can even think about living happily ever after, they get a shocking surprise: Leo turns up on their doorstep.
Turns out the sleazy character, who the pair thought they accidentally killed, is alive and well and has a major ax to grind. Not to mention one serious demand: He wants Sonny to keep his promise and marry him.
Back with A Vengeance
“This is one of my favorite storylines of all time,” says Freddie Smith, who plays Sonny. “Will and Sonny are finally together, and then Leo comes back and ruins it. And then he blackmails them… It’s just unbelievable.”
A big part of the reason Smith loves the story is working with Greg Rikaart (Leo), again.
“He comes back super snarky, and he’s so funny,” notes Smith. “It was some of the hardest work I’ve had to do at not laughing during the scene. Because Sonny hates this guy, and I, as an actor, love Greg. I was like, ‘Freddie, okay act.’”
Man in the Middle
While Sonny doesn’t want to succumb to Leo’s demands, he finds himself between a rock and a hard place.
On the one hand, he loves Will and desperately wants to reconcile with him. On the other hand, Leo is still holding his sexual harassment suit over Sonny’s head and now he’s threatening to add attempted murder to the mix.
“Sonny’s conflicted,” acknowledges Smith. “He wants to be with Will, but Leo’s insisting he marry him. And Sonny doesn’t really feel he has an option.
“Leo has this …continue reading on the next page —>
“Leo has this dirt on him. The company’s on the line. Titan’s on the line. None of this information can get out, because it would ruin the business.”
Triple Threat
This new twist adds a major wrinkle to what looked to be a clear path to Will and Sonny’s happy future together. And Smith is embracing all the turmoil that’s headed the couple’s way.
“With Paul, Will, and Sonny, the writers did an amazing job creating a love triangle with three gay characters,” says Smith. “They told that story, and that’s what soap operas are all about — love triangles.
“It’s also incredible that they’ve now brought on this villain with Leo, as well,” continues Smith. “He’s coming in and creating a new triangle, but in a false way. It’s also showing the progression [soaps are making] telling all these stories. Everyone is mixing together as they should.”
The Waiting Game
As for what Leo and his powerful threats will mean for Will and Sonny moving forward, Smith promises:
“It’s going to be a great story. I know the fans want Will and Sonny to get back together right away, but you want to hold it off. You don’t want them to be back in love and totally back together quite yet.”
And, of course, if Leo has his way, that might never happen.
