Soap operas are also known as daytime dramas but thankfully Days of Our Lives realizes that doesn’t mean there can’t be some fun!
And let’s face it — Salem needed some fun after it looked like Marlena (Deidre Hall) could die from a gunshot wound she got on her wedding day.
Here John (Drake Hogestyn) thought it was going to be the happiest day of his life, marrying his Doc, and instead he came thisclose to losing her.
John turned on their daughter Belle (Martha Madison) after she was just following her mother’s wishes that heroic measures not be used if all hope was lost. Those scenes were crushing to watch as both actors really brought it.
Just as we were ready to invest in Kleenex stock, in walked (or rather she was wheeled) Hattie as a much-needed breath of wacky air. She and Marlena are polar opposites. Where Marlena is loving and thinks of everyone else, Hattie is self-serving and calls it like she sees it.
Her scenes with Eve (Kassie DePaiva) were super fun, as she shocked the other woman by siding with her over her own “stepson” Brady (Eric Martsolf).
But the best was when Hattie thought she was alone and decided that she needed to dance it out.
Glee star,Heather Morrison subbed as the dance double for Hall and she certainly shook her moneymaker, shocking the heck out of poor Sami (Alison Sweeney). And in Sweeney, Hall found her perfect Hattie foil.
Their comedic timing was on point as Sami realized something was definitely off with this woman claiming to be her mother. When she did realize the truth and wanted to prove it, the dynamic duo became a trio with Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) coming upon them. She tried to protect the secret… and that’s when the fun really started.
What came next was some classic physical comedy as Sami became determined to cut open the hospital gown to see if there was a surgical scar. She scared the pants off Hattie so much, she immediately confessed the truth to keep Marlena’s crazy daughter from harming her.
It’s a shame Sweeney isn’t back full time. It’d be great to see Sami and Hattie take their act out on the road.
Days of our Lives (DOOL) airs weekdays on NBC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
