When Chase was just a little kid on Days of Our Lives, he had to try to outsmart Ciara who was bullying him. Now, Chase’s portrayer, Connor Kalopsis is playing a highly intelligent young man on the Fox sitcom Outmatched.
“The show’s about a couple who have four kids and three of them are certified geniuses,” Kalopsis told Soap Hub at the Fox Winter TV press tour in Pasadena, CA last month. The actor’s character is named Brian, who is 16 years old and is a quantum mechanics geek. “The parents on this show ask their kids to slow down and be kids!”
These parents, Mike and Kay, are played respectively by Jason Biggs (ex-Pete, As the World Turns) and Maggie Lawson (Lethal Weapon). “It’s a fun group all around,” Kalopsis says. “We have great chemistry.”
If he can’t locate on the Internet what some of the technical terms in the scripts mean, Kalopsis turns to the show’s ace script supervisor, Gwen, for aid. “She lets me know the definition of the words, which really helps me,” the actor says.
Kalopsis says he played the part of DAYS’ Chase for about 40 episodes from 2014-15 and he has fond memories of his time in Salem, particularly working with TV dad Aiden (Daniel Cosgrove).
After DAYS, Kalopsis landed the short-lived Fox series The Grinder on which he played the TV son of Fred Savage (The Wonder Years). “And now, I’ve got Jason Biggs playing my dad. I’ve worked with a lot of great fake dads!”
Kalopsis’ run in Salem came to an end when Chase SORAS’d to a teenager. He remains in touch via social media with Kristian Alfonso (Hope) and Lauren Bowles (ex-Ciara). “I learned a lot there because it was so fast-paced. You have to be on your game [in daytime] because you don’t get that many takes.”
The young actor recalls what it was like being recognized in public for one of the first times. “I was about 10 years old and I was at the airport. This 50-year-old lady came up to me and said, ‘You’re Chase Jennings on DAYS!’ I was like, ‘Yeah!’ We stopped in the middle of the security line to take a photo!”
The next episode of Outmatched airs Thursday, February 6 at 8:30 p.m. ET and is titled “Grandparents.” Days of Our Lives airs weekdays on NBC. Check local listings for air times.
