Beloved “Days of Our Lives” icon Mary Beth Evans used her Plank Blog to interview fellow icon and close friend Stephen Nichols on parenting and grandparenting. The two offered helpful observations and sage advice on these universal topics!
The Differences Between Parenting and Grandparenting
“The things that we get worked up about as parents—they don’t really matter. They’re going to grow out of it, or it’s going to pass. Being a grandparent is an interesting thing because you understand that,” Evans said, introducing their discussion.
The actress pointed out that Nichols wakes early in the morning with his young grandchildren whenever they’re visiting.
“I felt that I didn’t want to miss anything,” Nichols said of grandparenting.
The Grandfather Clause
He added that he wanted his grandchildren to have a strong relationship with him, especially because of the kinship he had with his own grandfather.
“My grandpa—because I didn’t have a father, I grew up without a father—was basically a father to me,” Nichols confessed.
Evans added, “The adult [grandparent] needs to make the effort more than the kids [parents] because they’ve got these little kids and they’re busy.”
Both actors said that as kids get older, it’s easy to get lazy about parenting and grandparenting. However, Evans and Nichols aim to stay committed to both roles.
That Old Patch and Kayla Chemistry
In this and other interviews Evans has done for her blog, her warmth and interest in people’s experiences shine through. Of course, that legendary Patch and Kayla chemistry also shines through in the easy rapport they have with each other.
