The fun didn’t stop for Days of Our Lives fans when the recent Day of DAYS event came to a conclusion. The following day, Stephen Nichols (Steve) and Mary Beth Evans (Kayla) greeted a group of loyal supporters over ice cream for a worthy cause!
The supercouple encouraged donations from their supporters to Special Needs Solutions, an organization in Tucson, Arizona that creates custom made furniture, clothing, devices, and equipment that helps individuals with disabilities progress on every level!
Nichols became more aware of special needs children when his brother-in-law started a non-profit, Special Needs Solutions. “If you go to the website, sntuscon.org,” Nichols said, “you can see some of the work they do and how these people are helped with devices that are designed and built especially for them. Special Needs Solutions makes special tables, chairs, benches — weighted blankets and electronic devices for kids and adults with autism, cerebral palsy, dwarfism, and brain damage. It’s amazing what they do! Thank you all for being here and being a part of this!”
In between serving up scoops of ice cream, Evans and Nichols happily fielded questions from attendees! Soap Hub was the only outlet on the scene to get the exclusive, er, scoop!
Preparing For Days of Our Lives Emotional Scenes
Stephen Nichols: It’s all about love for Mary Beth. When she gets into that ‘love zone,’ it’s all there.
Mary Beth Evans: We run lines at home and at work, over and over until we’re ready to do it. You have to be both ready to do it and be focused and present in the moment. We know these characters inside and out. We are huge fans of our characters! I’m idealistic enough about it that I’ll always go to a producer and [fight for Kayla’s integrity], but we know ultimately, it’s our job to do it. We let everything go and be present.
Stephen: I sometimes listen to the right music and relax into it. I’m ready. We usually only have one take to get it. I pull the patch down and I’m ready to go! And, what she said!
Kayla Going Bad For A Bit?
Mary Beth: There have been a few times where I’ve had to say ‘bitch’ or something to Kate (Lauren Koslow). I said, do we really say that? I shake when I talk back to people, but people say to me, ‘Say it!’ I find it kind of liberating. I don’t know. In one way, it’d be so out of character.
Blooper Reel Time?
Mary Beth: There’s no time. We are on a tight schedule. I hardly ever have any now.
Stephen: In the old days, every year the show would throw a Christmas party [where they would show a blooper reel]. Ours were usually breaking character and laughing uncontrollably. Mary Beth and I can make each other laugh till we cry.
Mary Beth’s Favorite Chef
Mary Beth: Good question, but I don’t have an answer. I used to be a huge Martha Stewart fan. I’d read everything in her Christmas book. I am always looking and trying new things. My husband bought a smoker. It’s the coolest thing! He’s smoking turkeys. I loved my cooking show on the DOOL App. We did it at my house and we had a stream of people there.
The Johnson Kids
Mary Beth: I was just saying that! It’s daytime so, it could be 20 years or a week! I think we should visit Joey (James Lastovic) in prison. We should go there. I’m not sure we’d get Shelley [Hennig, Stephanie] back. They might have to recast her now because [Shelley] is so busy.
Stephen: I’ve talked to [Shelley], but we haven’t heard anything about [them coming back]…yet.
Watch for Nichols to return to Salem later this year. (It sure looked like him dressed as Santa Claus in the sneak peek video shown at Day of DAYS!) Days of our Lives airs weekdays on NBC. Check local listings for air times.
