The character of Laura has been on Days of our Lives since a year after the show premiered. She was part of one of the original love triangles, between brothers Bill and Mickey Horton. Laura married Mickey but was raped by Bill and conceived a son, Mike, whom she passed off as Mickey’s for years.
Eventually, Mickey found out, tried to kill his brother, got amnesia, wandered off to a farm, met and married Maggie (Suzanne Rogers). While he was away, Laura reunited with Bill and eventually, they had Jennifer. Got that? Years later, Laura (Jaime Lyn Bauer) slept with her son-in-law, Jack, while he was on the outs with Jennifer. She’s big on family.
Except now it looks like an unexpected member of the family, Jack’s (Matthew Ashford) heretofore unknown daughter, Gwen (Emily O’Brien) has killed Laura. Did the show make a mistake, getting rid of such a long-term legacy character? What over 2,000 fans told us:
What a terrible, terrible call, 69% of you lamented. There was a lot more drama in Laura trying to make amends to Gwen, Jack, and Jennifer (Cady McClain) than in her just being unceremoniously disposed of. Plus, she was a connection to the once central Horton family. There are a lot more Bradys, Johnsons, and Kiriakises now. We should have cherished every one we had.
It’s a great story, cheers a smaller 31% of the audience. Laura had been gone for years up to this point, so it’s not like she leaves a huge hole on the canvas. She is much more interesting dead than she has been alive recently.
Her demise shines the spotlight on not just Jack, Jennifer (Cady McClain), and Gwen, but on Abigail (Marci Miller), who needs something more to do than either chastise Chad (Billy Flynn) or sneer at Gabi (Camila Banus). Days of our Lives (DOOL) airs weekdays on NBC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
