Killing children and babies is not a new soap phenomenon and it honestly never makes any sense and of course, breaks our hearts, but sometimes the way the story is told goes so very wrong that you wonder what the heck a soap – in this case, Days of Our Lives – could have been thinking when the idea popped up in the proverbial writer’s room.
With this one, we think it went a little like this,
“Hey, let’s have a character get pregnant after a one-night stand with a man she has no real feelings for, have the guy she really loves find out real early on to get rid of that drama fast, and then form no connection between the parents and then give the mom a typically harmless condition, and then kill the baby. But, hey, let’s show a live baby just to mess with people’s minds. THAT’s IT!!!”
So, let’s delve in here. First, placenta previa. While a small percentage of cases can be dangerous, for the most part, it’s not. However, as a precaution, many women are told to take it easy at work and certainly not given the go-ahead to continue being an active cop on the job.
Maybe, if DAYS really had it in for this baby, it could have given Lani something more serious or at least treat the condition she had more realistically.
Next, did we seriously have to see Lani hold a live, healthy, full-term baby in her fantasy just after we learned her actual baby had died? Can you rub a little bit more salt in that wound there, DAYS?
DAYS made sure to get the info out there that this baby would die, so there was absolutely no suspense here. So, watching the Hortons gather around Eli and plan for the baby just stung more.
And now, where is the story? There is no baby to bring Lani and Eli together, nor is there a baby to cause more strife between Lani and JJ. Now, all we have are two mourning parents who don’t even love one another.
If someone had to die here, why not Lani? No offense to Lani, but that would have offered more story. Eli alone with a preemie. Abe mourning the loss of his daughter while he still has his grandson to love. And a living legacy character, to boot. THAT would have worked. THIS does not.
