While there has been a smattering of laughs on Days Of Our Lives (DOOL), they have served up some pretty heavy stories lately, as well.
There was Nicole’s (Arianne Zucker) endless caterwauling over Holly, followed by Brady’s (Eric Mastolf) self-inflicted downward spiral now that he’s decided Nicole actually wants Eric (Greg Vaughn), not him.
There are Gabi’s (Camilla Banus) regular-as- clockwork kidnappings, not to mention losing Chad (Billy Flynn) to Abigail (Marci Miller). And let’s not forget Marlena (Deidre Hall) and John (Drake Hogysten) in danger of having their brains fried.
Oh, and hitting-rock-bottom Lucas (Bryan Datillo) chatting drunkenly with the ghost of his dead son, Will (Chandler Massey).
Then, in the middle of all that, they had the 1980s-throwback camp stylings of Morgan Fairchild as Anjelica, the petulant snark of Kate (Lauren Koslow) and Andre (Thaao Penghlis), and the wacky hijinks of Hattie (Hall, again) and Bonnie (Judi Evans). They were funny. Whether they meant to be or not. Are you hoping for more levity in Salem?
Laughs In the Afternoon
According to 47% of the audience, yes, absolutely! Give us a break from the doom and gloom! Please! Even what’s supposed to be a happy occasion, the upcoming double-wedding, you suspect will turn tragic for at least one couple before the vows are said. You need the funny to give you a chance to catch your breath!
Tearing Up
Sure, chuckle 43% of you. As long as the writing and acting is actually, you know, funny. Some recent attempts have been downright painful, so if that’s the case… stick to tears of sadness, not joy.
Do What You Do Best
It’s daytime drama, not daytime comedy, counter 8% of the fans. Soap writers are really, really bad at writing comedy. It comes off more silly than funny. So cut it out and stick to what you do best!
