Deidre Hall Speaks Candidly About Her Mother’s Illness

Getting older isn’t easy for any of us, and during Low Vision Awareness Month, Days of Our Lives star Deidre Hall opened up about what her mother, Jean, is going through to bring attention to age-related macular degeneration.

The actress spoke with Soaps In Depth about what her mother has been experiencing in an effort to help others who may be going through a similarly hard time.

“We knew what she had,” she admitted to the magazine. “We just knew there weren’t really a lot of viable treatments for it at the time. So it was managing the symptoms more than anything else.”

Hall relayed that her mother had a more serious form of the disease called Wet AMD, and it eventually took her mother’s eyesight completely. They did their best to mitigate what was happening to her. Since her mother loved to read, they did things like getting her books on tape.

Basically, the disease can cause blurriness in the center of your vision. It can also cause straight lines to look wavy, while colors may look dull. Not only that, it can cause blind spots and also make objects seem farther away than they are in reality. What happens can hamper your ability to read, write, drive, and even recognize faces.
