DAYS spoilers have teased that from the time Alex Kiriakis showed up — shirtless — his brother, Sonny Kiriakis, has seemed exasperated by his mere existence.

The last we heard, all four Kiriakis boys were happily working together to find a cure for breast cancer in memory of their beloved mother, Adrienne Johnson Kiriakis (Judi Evans). But it looks like all was not smooth sailing. So what in the world does Sonny (Zach Tinker) have against Alex (Robert Scott Wilson)?

As Alex pointed out to Stephanie Johnson (Abigail Kelin), who, you’d think, would know that about her own cousins, while Sonny’s biological mother was Adrienne, she was only Alex’s adoptive mom.
The woman who gave birth to Alex was Anjelica Deveraux (Morgan Fairchild), who Justin Kiriakis (Wally Kurth) and Adrianne decided was such a horrible person that they took baby Alex away from her and raised him themselves as part of their one big happy family.

And therein lies the problem. Justin and Adrienne outright hated Anjelica. Do you think Alex didn’t pick up on that? Do you think Sonny didn’t?

Alex had to grow up with the suspicion that he was the bad seed. Sure, his other brothers, Vic and Joe, were also adopted, but at least his parents didn’t hate their biological mother. They just pretended she’d never existed. And what’s a kid supposed to do when he suspects his mother was awful? Why, try to outdo her, of course. Children live up to what their parents expect of them.

Meanwhile, Sonny was Justin and Adrienne’s only biological child. Their miracle baby. The one who could do no wrong. He picked up on that subtext, too. Sonny grew up knowing it was his good boy role to keep bad brother Alex in line. So what’s Sonny’s issue with Alex? It’s that their parents messed up the job.
