When Martha Madison isn’t wowing us as Belle on Days of our Lives she and her husband have opened and run restaurants for several years. So the actress knows what she’s talking about when she gives the stark reality that’s facing that industry in the wake of isolations imposed by the coronavirus pandemic.
Martha Madison Speaks Out
The actress already gave the sage advice of suggesting people buy gift cards to help their favorite restaurants survive this crisis. Now Madison has taken to social media to explain further how this will impact a huge segment of our national economy.
“The US leisure and hospitality industry employ 15 million people. That’s 10% of the American workforce and the fifth largest employment sector in the country. We are the nomads, the misfits, the students, the single parents and the artists who support our endeavors with the schedule and financial flexibility the restaurant industry offers,” she writes.
She also has a warning. “Many of us don’t have support systems (other than each other) to help us through times like these. As of today, most restaurants in major cities have closed and laid off countless employees. Inevitably, there will be more to come.”
A Need For Intervention
We need meaningful relief. Restaurant owners and employees need actual checks (#UBI) immediately. We need a halt on all commercial evictions (ie: rent relief). We need a halt on all tax payments until/if we are up and running with cash flow again, and we need debt (ie: bank) relief if we aren’t able to open again.
“When this ends, we will also need tax and cash incentives to be able to hire again ASAP. Our leaders have suggested bailouts for the airline and cruise industries but nothing yet for us. Please share and/or contact your local officials with this message!” Days of our Lives (DOOL) airs weekdays on NBC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
