The Tokyo Olympics are taking over NBC for the next two weeks but that’s no reason to not get your Days of our Lives fix. Today, we’re taking a look back at the powerful love story between John Black and Marlena Evans.

Marlena Evans and John Black Through the Years

Their love story got off to an unconventional start. John Black (Drake Hogestyn) came on the Salem scene as The Pawn. Marlena (Deidre Hall) was a widow, having lost her husband Roman Brady. She helped John, who had no memory of who he was, and while on an adventure, discovered that he was in fact her dead husband, Roman.

For years, he thought he was Roman — and he “remarried” Doc and eventually mourned her supposed death. They were reunited, only to eventually learn that the real Roman was alive.

Immediately John lost his family, though the Bradys had no intention of abandoning him. Marlena tried to make it work with Roman but the draw to John was too strong and the two gave in to their feelings. This was witnessed by her daughter Sami Brady DiMera (Alison Sweeney) — and Belle Black (Martha Madison) was conceived during the time of their illicit affair.

Over the years, the two have fought outside forces, inner demons, and so much more to build an incredible life together. They’ve cheated death, raised kids, spoiled their grandkids, and so much more. Take a walk down Memory Lane and remember some incredible moments from their love story below.
