Days of our Lives News Update: Susan Seaforth Hayes Reveals Details Of New Book

Susan Seaforth Hayes first appeared on Days of our Lives in 1968, and over the ensuing 50-plus years has made Julie one of Salem’s most beloved figures.

Susan Seaforth Hayes: Using Her Time Wisely

While the actress has been stuck at home in Los Angeles due to the coronavirus pandemic, she has put her free time to good use, collaborating with her long-time off- and on-screen husband Bill Hayes (Doug Williams) on their second novel.

In an interview with Soaps.com, the legendary soap star notes the rough draft is just about ready for their publisher to edit.

“It’s a project we’ve been working on for approximately seven years,” Hayes told Soaps.com. “It’s a sequel to our first novel, which is about an actress at the beginning of the 19th century. The first novel was Trumpet and this next novel is probably going to be called Trumpet’s Jubilee. It’s the same era as Jane Austen. This character is now in Charleston, South Carolina during a great upheaval slave rebellion that was thwarted.”

Exploring Charleston

One of her favorite parts of writing the book was she and Hayes headed down to Charleston several times for research—and a bit of fun. Working with the Charleston Historical Society, the couple was able to learn a lot about the city’s storied history and took several tours to visit the sites for which Charleston is famous.

Susan Seaforth Hayes adds that they read lots of books on the city as well, and did some research on the internet, but that being there in person was so much more helpful to understanding the true spirit of Charleston.

Over At Days of our Lives

With Doug slated to be appearing in Salem soon, Hayes shares that she would love Julie and Doug to return to some of their fun “detective days” from the 80s.

“We did some storylines where they acted as detectives assisting investigations and they were fun to do,” she said. “They enabled Bill to use all of his wonderful accents. He’s a theatre performer and he’s just great with accents. I would love to do something where we are working undercover and had an opportunity to wear funny wigs and do funny stuff that would be great.” Days of our Lives (DOOL) airs weekdays on NBC.
