Daytime Emmy nominees are known to practice their award acceptance speeches in front of a mirror. This year, nominees, including Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie, Days of our Lives), have taken that a step further by putting their speeches on tape ahead of time.
Susan Hayes Is Ready For The Emmys
The move is out of necessity since the 47th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards are going to be a virtual event this year due to coronavirus and social-distancing concerns. “We’ve already recorded an acceptance speech on Zoom,” Hayes, who’s nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in Drama Series for her role as Julie on Days of our Lives, told TV Insider. “Everyone has [to my knowledge].”
Hayes’ attire befits the occasion. “I’m wearing something in my living room that I like,” she says. “It shows from the mid-chest up and I’m wearing some of my favorite antique jewelry. I hope it gets on the air. I rehearsed the speech. My husband [Bill Hayes, Doug] liked it. We did three takes. The thing is you have to try to give yourself up to that high as they’re opening the envelope and then try to capture that moment while you’re in your pajama bottoms.”
Oddly absent from the list of nominees is Bill Hayes as he and his wife submitted more or less the same scenes related to Julie’s heart attack. Susan says that her spouse was thrilled she’d been given this honor.
“The words ‘jealousy’ or ‘anger’ just don’t fit,” Susan Seaforth Hayes says. “He doesn’t get that way. Bill was very happy for me. We were thrilled with the Lifetime Achievement Award two years ago. It was a great time. Our family made a huge to-do over it. It was a great bonding experience as many of them live far from Hollywood.”
Days of our Lives airs weekdays on NBC. Check local listings for air times. The 47th Annual Daytime Emmys air on Friday, June 26 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
