Days of Our Lives News Update: An African-American Salem First This Week

After trying to tie the knot almost two years ago in Salem time (but really eight months ago in real-time), Eli and Lani finally get it right this week in a Days of Our Lives first. Yes, it’s the first time in the soap’s 54 years that an African-American couple will wed on screen.

Elani Wed

Actor Lamon Archey pointed this historic wedding out in a tweet on Friday, saying: “#Elani WILL BE THE FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN COUPLE TO GET MARRIED ON @nbcdays IN 54 YEARS!!! #Days #TvHistory #RetweetThis.”

Some wondered about Abe and Lexie, who remained husband and wife for years until Lexie’s death, but this pair was never given a wedding with fanfare and instead married off-screen. Even James Reynolds, who plays Abe, chimed in on Archey’s tweet with a “HALLELUJAH!”

Now Abe’s daughter, Lani, is the bride and the groom is the son of David Banning and Valerie Grant, DAYS’ first interracial couple back in the 1970s and early 1980s. It’s going to be a day to remember as Lani and Eli give it the old college try one more time but things will not go as planned — because this is Salem and what event ever goes as planned?

Vivian is set to show up bent on revenge after Lani shot and killed her son Stefan (maybe) in the line of duty back in 2019. But in the end, the couple does become man and wife, making Days of Our Lives history in the end.

Days of our Lives History

DOOL made its debut in 1965 and is one of the longest-running daytime soap operas in American history. It has outlasted other soaps to become a mainstay for many households. Needless to say, five decades of storylines have kept viewers locked in and wanting more.

From Stefano DiMera’s (Joseph Mascolo) evil schemes to Victor Kiriakis’s (John Aniston) one-liners to the epic love story of Bo (Peter Reckell) and Hope (Kristian Alfonso), DAYS knows how to entertain and keep fans coming back for more with newer pairs like Lani and Eli. Sadly, times are shifting and daytime soap operas are shrinking.

Bringing the Drama

It is one of only four remaining soap operas currently on the air. The other three daytime dramas include General Hospital (GH), The Young and the Restless (YR), and The Bold and the Beautiful (BB). DAYS airs weekdays on NBC. Check your local listings for air times.
