It’s been a few years since Gabi (Camila Banus) and Rafe (Galen Gering) have seen their father Eduardo on Days of our Lives and for his real-life portrayer, A Martinez, it’s been a while since he’s gotten to do something he’s done for over 55 years — but he knows he’s made this change for the right reasons.
The beloved soap veteran (he also played Cruz on Santa Barbara, Roy on General Hospital, Ray on One Life to Live, and Dr. Ramon Montgomery on The Bold and the Beautiful) took to his Instagram account to explain this huge change and how he feels about it:
“I’ve been a gym rat all my life. In fifty-five years — until now — I’ve only twice missed as much as a month: once while recovering from hepatitis; once as a dumb experiment when my shoulder was messed up. The loss of this habit — all mitigating strategies aside — has been as difficult an aspect of the new normal as any other challenge.
“I so miss the hormonal reset of forcing my bones to bear all that weight: in any given workout, the sum total of all the iron a person moves through space in those reps and sets will be in the thousands of pounds. It makes the rest of life so much easier — one’s own body feels lightened in reaction to the work, and access to physical fluidity remains ongoing.
“But today, breathing AC in a closed space with people exhaling robustly — some of whom I see with my own eyes around town to be disdainful of respecting the power of the new antagonist in the story — is a reckless pursuit. I’m an elder at this point, in possession of a miraculous degree of vitality and strength for my age.
“And as much as I miss the gathered tools and the camaraderie of my old hangout, I’m not gonna risk the ruination of my lungs and the permanent weakening of my heart and kidneys in this, the latter chapters of my life. Long story short: today I assembled shelves and lifted heavy boxes for several hours.
“And for now, days like these will have to do. Uncertainty is hard. Time has made that clear. But learning to live with her is eventually a portal to grace. Time has proven that as well. #patience #discipline #theembraceofthemoment” he wrote. Days of our Lives (DOOL) airs weekdays on NBC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
