It’s not often you see legendary Days of Our Lives star on social media, but when you do, it’s usually for a very good reason. On Friday night, Reckell had a message for his fans.
Apparently, someone had spoofed Reckell’s Twitter account, creating a page that looked exactly like this and was even sending Direct Messages (DMs) to the actor’s followers. Some fans were acutely aware this is not typical so they alerted the actor and his wife, Kelly Moneymaker.
The actor’s wife, who often interacts with fans tweeted the following: “This is Peter’s wife. This is NOT Peter Reckell’s account. This is an impersonator! Peter’s real account has a BLUE check next to his name. Shame on you for impersonating him & misleading loyal fans.”
It seems the scammer was asking for money and astute follower Lisa Neuman described the message in a response to a tweet from Moneymaker: “Yeah this said person claiming to be your husband sent me a direct message asking me for money for a relief fund for the fans. He said he would send me money if I made a donation. I didn’t fall for it. Instead, I told them they were a fake account and then reported them.”
Reckell himself also weighed in and advised his followers to look for the telltale sign that someone is scamming and/or impersonating a public figure.
“Just a heads up. Someone has a site that looks like mine out there, so make sure you see the blue check next to my name when looking for the real me.:) Be safe folks!!!”
He then told fans that he’s love to interact with all of them, but clearly there just isn’t time and then offered his signature sense of humor.
“Yeah, that’s what is happing. [I] Would love to DM all of you but, Ummm…Sorry, time for dinner, gotta go:).”
Reckell and Moneymaker are correct that we should always look for that blue checkmark to make sure we are interacting with the real deal. They aren’t always easy to come by, so if someone has one, you know they are the real deal. Of course, we’d love to see the real deal back on DAYS as Bo one day, but we know the actor is happy away from the limelight being a dad. Days of our Lives (DOOL) airs weekdays on NBC.
