April is Autism Awareness Month, although many on the spectrum prefer to call it Autism Acceptance Month. And, Days of Our Lives star, Bryan Dattilo, whose son Gabriel was diagnosed on the spectrum as a toddler, has a special message that he would like everyone to hear.
The actor posted a video message about it to both Instagram and Twitter, saying: “Autism Awareness. Respect the difference. Be kind. #Just Bee. #AutismAwarenessMonth #autismspeaks #AutismAcceptance.”
In the video, Dattilo mentions several organizations that help those with autism, including a new one close to his heart called Just Bee — a non-profit organization dedicated to families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Dattilo is asking people to “respect the difference and be kind.” He also promises to be back with more information about the organization. You can watch his video in its entirety below.
Back in 2009, Dattilo gave an interview to PEOPLE about helping out his son and gave the following advice for parents who have also discovered that their child is dealing with autism.
“Realize that you never know what the future is going to hold, so the more you work with a child, it might not seem like you’re getting a lot back at the time, but five or six years down the road, when your child is mainstreamed…then that’s the rewarding part. As long as you catch it early and don’t give up, there is hope.”
