We had such high hopes nearly a year ago when we learned Matthew Ashford was returning to Days of Our Lives as unlikely-hero-with-a-dark-past, Jack Deveraux. Of course, we didn’t actually see him until New Year’s Eve thanks to DAYS’ tape schedule, but did we REALLY see him?
Well, maybe a few times since the year started has the real Jack Deveraux come out to play, but they have been fleeting moments that don’t really satisfy fans.
It’s hard to imagine the Jack we knew being manipulated by the likes of Eve, memory or no memory. And sure, Jack was raised by a politician and toyed with politics in his young adult years, but that’s not who Jack really is.
In fact, using Jack to play out what feels like a parody of real-life politics in 2019 America feels almost sinful.
Let’s also look at Eve’s senseless vendetta. She is once again out to get Jennifer for what reason again? Because she broke up her relationship with Brady? As we recall, Brady still wanted to take her back despite her causing him to lose Tate, but she was the one who couldn’t forgive Brady for the Kristen debacle.
(And something tells us, knowing Brady, he would have slept with Kristen as a ‘noble’ act whether he knew Eve had those drugs planted or not.)
Eve should be more angry at Ben for killing her daughter than she should be at Jennifer for ‘costing her” Shady Brady. But nope, it’s all about Jack for some reason and sticking it to a high school rival from 30+ years ago. Sorry, it just doesn’t work.
And, neither does the Clean Slate Candidate. Jack was a reporter and a damn good one. An enemy of the people, in this day and age. He exposed dirty politicians and even risked his life in Afghanistan to report on America’s longest war.
We want THAT Jack back. The bumbling man who would never hurt his kids and who hurt whenever he hurt Jennifer. This Jack is not him. We see little signs of him, but it’s not what we’ve waited for.
Perhaps DAYS thought this story would work, but like all stories that do NOT work on this show, they couldn’t bail mid-stream. The whole thing is in the can and there’s nothing we can do now except wait till it’s over and hope that Jack emerges from the rubble.
