It Was Shane?!?!?! Days of Our Lives Cheats With Stefano Story Twist

There was much hoopla when Days of Our Lives released the news that we hadn’t seen the last of the late Joseph Mascolo, as there were more scenes he shot before his death last December.

Stefano was supposedly killed a year ago after egging on Hope (Kristian Alfonso) to shoot him, knowing full well he was going to die soon anyway. It was a brilliant last move on the chessboard from the greatest villain Salem had ever known. Yet, it looked like the soap was going to undo that wonderful bit of storytelling this week by having the Phoenix rise one more time.

But, there was one last move on that chessboard played – by the show – in the form of a plan put forth by Steve (Stephen Nichols) in which Shane (Charles Shaughnessy) posed as Stefano (with the help of some padding and miracle makeup), which shocked and even dismayed fans across social media Friday afternoon.

It was a bit of a cheat – because really, how can anyone really look exactly like someone else, especially Shane as Stefano? It was good enough to fool everyone, even Marlena (Deidre Hall), who obviously knows him best. It explains why he never spoke (Shane couldn’t have duplicated that voice) and just laughed at the people who were yelling at him, including Anna (Leann Hunley).

Yet it achieved its goal and will free Hope, who the writers wrote into a corner. But couldn’t there have been a better way? Eric (Greg Vaughan) managed to get an early release. Surely, Hope could have done something heroic to earn her own. Either way, it’s great to finally have this story over, but we sincerely wish Hope is told of the plan when the gang returns from Prague. Knowing she killed her family’s arch enemy added an interesting layer to the character we would hate to see undone. That would be the real crime.
