He has been on and off Days of Our Lives since 1972, and now Bill Hayes is celebrating a huge day.
That is because he was born on June 5, 1925 in Harvey, Illinois and today he is turning 93 years old!
Hayes entered World War II as a naval airman and after he studied at De Pauw University. While there, he met and married his first wife, Mary, and together they had five kids. Later, he would get his masters degree at Northwestern. He and Mary would divorce in 1969.
Hayes always had a love for music, which he got from his father. He did singing telegrams and sang with jazz groups before landing on Your Show of Shows with Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca in 1950.
He also performed in Vaudeville and broke into films with a supporting role in Stop, You’re Killing Me in 1952 and after that, Broadway was calling for him in the musical, “Me and Juliet.”
Success continued for the handsome actor/singer, but it was landing the role of Doug Williams on DAYS that would change his life in many ways when he met Susan Seaforth, who still plays Julie. Their characters’ romance was one of the top stories in the 1970s.
The two married on October 12, 1974 and even graced the cover of Time Magazine in 1976, a feat few soaps or soap opera actors can claim.
The popular couple remains married to this day. Their appearances on the show continue, with Julie counseling the younger generation and Doug remaining Hope’s (Kristian Alfonso) rock. Their father/daughter relationship is beloved and has been for decades.
