Why It Is Do Or Die Time on Days of our Lives

What they are doing right…and wrong…to stay on the air.

Days of our Lives Bell Shawn

Days of our Lives fans dodged the same bullet that had, in this century, struck down Guiding Light, As the World Turns, All My Children, and One Life to Live, when, instead of canceling the long-running daytime drama, NBC instead moved the show to their streaming platform, Peacock+.

Days of our Lives: Step It Up

But we’re not out of the woods yet. Right now, the episodes airing on Peacock have already been shot. It’s a sunk cost for the network. However, in order to receive the funds to shoot more episodes, DAYS needs to prove its worth. Pretty much immediately. Here’s what they’re doing right in that direction…and what they are doing tragically wrong.

Do the Right Thing

The show is a nice mix of longtime favorites like Marlena Brady Black (Deidre Hall) and John Black (Drake Hogestyn), second-generation faves like Belle Black Brady (Martha Madison) and Shawn Brady (Brandon Beemer), and relative newbies like Gabi Hernandez DiMera (Camila Banus), Allie Horton (Lindsay Arnold), and Chanel Dupree (Raven Bowens). Keeping Sonny Kiriakis (Zach Tinker) on the canvas despite Will Horton (Chandler Massey) no longer being a regular, and finding a new role for heartthrob Robert Scott Wilson (Alex Kiriakis), were also good moves, as is the addition of appealing young actress Abigail Klein as Stephanie Johnson, which gives more story for her parents, the beloved Steve Johnson (Stephen Nichols) and Kayla Brady Johnson (Mary Beth Evans).

Days of our Lives: Wrong Way

On the other hand, the Abigail Deveraux DiMera (Marci Miller) murder mystery has been a debacle from the first day, culminating with the destruction of what could have been the sweetest older couple to hit Salem in ages, Nancy Wesley (Patrika Darbo) and Clyde Weston (James Read). As if the woman who had already been treated so horribly by not just her ex-husband but also the show’s writers needed another kick in the teeth.

Add to that a story where Marlena, Kayla, and Kate Roberts (Lauren Koslow) have been stricken by a respiratory virus…way, way, WAY too soon to go there, show….and yet another go-around of Nicole Walker Hernandez (Adrianne Zucker) claims she loves one guy, steals him away from the woman he’s with, and then decides she loves someone else…and there are some very, very off-putting tales playing out.

We realize DAYS tapes months in advance, so they can’t change course now. And yet we still fervently hope that they somehow miraculously will. And that we’ll end up with many more years of DAYS to come.
