Days of our Lives is entering this holiday season with stories guaranteed to turn off their female viewers in droves. And we must wonder: Is this basic cluelessness, sheer incompetence, or a deliberate plot? All of the possibilities are absolutely chilling for the future of Salem and the genre in general.
We’ve already written about how women, many of whom are mothers, absolutely hate dead baby storylines. It may win Emmys, but it always drives down ratings. So what are we getting for Christmas? Nicole (Arianne Zucker) mourning her child, that’s what. Just how clueless is this writing staff?
But wait, there’s more! In addition to Nicole thinking her baby is dead, Gabi (Camila Banus) is also separated from her daughter this Christmas for a crime we all know she didn’t commit. And if that’s not enough torture, why, we just got to see Ava (Tamara Braun) threatened with sexual assault.
Do the writers think women enjoy watching potential sexual assault? That’s not just incompetence. That’s criminal incompetence.
So dead babies, mothers separated from their children, and rape. Just one would be bad enough. All three within a week are horrific. It’s tempting to think that the writers are just clueless and incompetent. But this just seems like too perfect of a storm.
It’s so perfect, in fact, that it’s making us wonder whether this is some deliberate attempt to alienate the audience that has been supporting DAYS since its debut in 1965. Could it be possible that the Peacock production staff has a new vision for Salem? A vision that they know the old audience won’t like. So what better way to cut off any complaints than by driving the old audience away before they unveil their new vision? Though who is going to be around by then to see it, we’ve got to wonder.
