There’s nothing that incites a viewer’s emotions like a heartfelt baby story. Having a mother and child torn apart by a twist of fate or, even better, an unscrupulous schemer. While Days of our Lives is playing all the right beats with its big baby switch story, there’s one huge flaw that’s ruining it – there’s no actual infant in the plot.
Since Nicole (Arianne Zucker) gave birth on the side of the road, fans have never seen her newborn son. When Dimitri (Peter Porte) delivered the child to Sloan’s (Jessica Serfaty) door and handed him over to Melinda (Tina Huang), there was no “oohing” and “ahhing” over the precious little one’s sweet face. And, later, when Nicole abducted the child, there was no face-to-face mother-and-son moment. That’s because there’s no baby on set, totally detracting from what’s meant to be a gut-wrenching story — about a baby
As a fan it’s impossible to feel any emotion toward a football in a blanket, to develop a genuine connection to a bundled blob. Especially when the best part of these kinds of storylines is catching an actual glimpse of the little one everyone is devoted to or longing for. A blanket doesn’t cut it.
Obviously, DAYS’ budgetary constraints have made it difficult to employ a real baby in scenes. There are limited working hours, production is slowed down, and there’s the cost of having a guardian on set. But, if you’re telling a story about a baby, viewers need to see one on occasion. At the very least the soap should have invested in one of those lifelike silicone babies. Then the child could have actually been shown in long shots.
When the day finally comes when Nicole learns Jude is her son and is reunited with him, DAYS better have a genuine baby boy on set for the much-anticipated scene. If the soap doesn’t, it will be doing a great disservice to one of its most long-awaited and biggest payoff moments.
