Heroine. Vixen. Anti-heroine. Bitch. Call DAYS’ Gabi Hernandez DiMera what you like, but there’s no denying that the character gets fans talking, and there’s no denying that actress Camila Banus is deserving of Soap Hub’s Performer of the Week honors.

Camila Banus — Performer of the Week

When she first appeared on screen, Banus’s Gabi was all bark and bluster. She wanted to know Dr. Wilhelm Rolf’s (Richard Wharton) whereabouts and she wanted to know them right then and there and damn the poor investigator he didn’t get her the info forthwith!

Seconds later, Banus was required to shift her entire mood. Gabi’s perennial detractor, EJ DiMera (Dan Feuerriegel) had made himself at home in her office, at her desk no less, and while that didn’t please Gabi one little bit, interactions with EJ required a certain amount of calm, flippant though it may be.

First, she ordered EJ to be gone, then she threatened to sic the police on him…but that’s what he wanted her to do. That way he could tell them all about the illegal subterfuge that Gabi and Ava Vitali (Tamara Braun) employed so that the latter could acquire Jake DiMera’s (Brandon Barash) interest in DiMera Enterprises.

Gabi preceded to hem and haw, make big pronouncements, count her chickens before they’d hatched; EJ always had a counter to offer; Banus made sure that her face telegraphed a range of emotions: anger, fear, and…a flicker of resignment? Never fear, Gabi wasn’t counting herself out just yet!

Camila Banus’s best scenes came later, opposite co-star Barash, when Gabi finally snapped and begged, nay, demanded that Stefan remember the love that they once shared. Her efforts were all for naught, for now, but they did shake something loose in Stefan’s psyche.

Honorable Mention: Dan Feuerriegel

Banus’ sparring partner was a sight to behold as he rattled off a laundry list of misdeeds committed by Gabi and Ava replete with exaggerated hand motions — the “rolling waves” he did while explaining how Ava had sold Gabi up the river was particularly enjoyable — and accompanying sound effects. EJ is never more fun than when Feuerriegel’s being bad.
