Days of our Lives: Why John Black’s Actions Speak Louder Than Words

Show not tell is the first rule of storytelling, and Days of our Lives is no exception. What a character does is so much more valuable than what they say, and, this week, John Black held a master class in how to support your kids.

John Black: Curb Your Days of our Lives Enthusiasm

After finishing off the heavy topics like Bo (Peter Reckell) being back from the dead and Roman (Josh Taylor) learning that his brother was the one who killed his wife, John (Drake Hogysten) subtly prodded Andrew about the latter’s relationship with John’s son, Paul (Christopher Sean).

After Andrew admitted that he and Paul were giving romance another shot, John couldn’t hide his delight. And then he went ahead and put his foot in his mouth, dad-style, by mentioning love. John backpedaled like the wind, and Andrew good-naturedly let him off the hook, but the damage was done. As was the good stuff.

DOOL: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

So often, when soaps — any media, really — tackles a controversial issue, they have a tendency to make-long winded speeches at the camera about how we should all be accepting and tolerant and kind. It comes off as preachy and condescending and, worst of all, boring.

John didn’t lecture the audience. John simply and sincerely supported his son and his son’s boyfriend in the same way he supports Brady’s (Eric Martsolf) relationship with Chloe (Nadia Bjorlin). John didn’t draw our attention to it. He just acted like a loving dad.

John Black Days of our Lives: Let Me Entertain You

The scene between John and Andrew was light, fun, sincere…and commonplace. Acceptance comes from not treating different people differently. Sure, John was an overbearing parent, butting his nose into his kid’s love life. Any of his kids. All of his kids. His message was perfectly received. Because it wasn’t sent as a message at all.
