Days of our Lives Misfire: Why the Colin Bedford Story Is a Dud

We care about Paulina, Chanel, Rafe and Eric Brady on DAYS, but that’s not who we saw.

On paper, the tale of Colin Bedford seeking revenge should have worked on Days of our Lives. It involved characters the audience had grown to love, like Paulina, Chanel, Abe, Rafe, and even Eric. But, in the end, the whole thing turned into a snooze-fest. And we think we know why.

Days of our Lives: Out With the Old

Yes, the story of the children of the woman Chanel (Raven Bowens) killed in England coming back to seek revenge could have been interesting. But while it did involve Chanel, Paulina (Jackée Harry), Abe (James Reynolds), Rafe (Galen Gering), and Eric (Greg Vaughan), the majority of the action centered on Sloan, Colin, and Talia. Three newcomers…that we had no investment in.

DOOL: So Far Away

Talia’s (Aketra Sevillian) actions affected Jada (Elia Cantu). But she was new, too. Colin’s (Jasper Newman) actions affected Sloan (Jessica Serfaty). Sloan’s actions affected Eric. So it was four levels of separation before we got to anyone we were invested in and a story we were invested in: the paternity of Nicole’s (Arianne Zucker) baby-to-be. There was also Rafe and Jada. Is there a Rafe and Jada? We can’t tell.

Colin Bedford: Days of our Lives Stand Off

Colin threatened Talia. Jada burst in to rescue her sister. And viewers were left to wonder: What show are we watching? Who are these people? And, most importantly, why should we care?

It was Chanel who called the cops, and Johnny (Carson Boatman) was there, too. Except they stayed downstairs while the cops did their thing. They were never at risk. And so we were never worried.

Meanwhile, Sloan fretted about her brother. Eric patted her hand and said, “There, there. There, there.” But if given the choice between a woman we barely know worrying about a brother we don’t know at all, and her snarking with Nicole and EJ, that’s no contest. Every minute Sloan was with her brother was a moment she was not stirring up trouble for Nicole and Eric. In the end, the story may have been acceptable, but the characters they chose to tell it with left us cold.
