Bo Brady and Hope Williams Brady’s long-awaited Days of our Lives return is now over and it certainly had its ups and downs. While many fans were disappointed that the uber-popular supercouple didn’t get their happily-ever-after, the soap did leave the door wide open for another return and much more storyline angst.
At Least Bo Brady Is Alive Now on Days of our Lives
In 2015 when Bo died in Hope’s (Kristian Alfonso) arms in the same spot where they shared their first kiss in the park decades prior, it all felt wrong. Peter Reckell chose to return to the soap for a short run to close out his character’s story, but to have a death that looked so final was heartbreaking to long-time fans.
For eight long years, we waited to see if it was possible that Dr. Wilhelm Rolf (Richard Wharton) may have worked some magic on Bo as he had done for so many others, but it never happened — until last summer. At the end of Days of our Lives: Beyond Salem, Chapter 2, Bo opened his eyes and said Hope’s name after being in a cryogenic state for years, and we couldn’t wait to see what came next.
Unfortunately, what came next isn’t what fans had hoped for. Yes, Bo and Hope did have a reunion and Bo now exists as a live character in the DAYS universe once again. So it feels like an egregious wrong has been made right, but after a nearly decade-long Bo and Hope drought, we needed a little bit more.
DAYS: Angst And Romance Can Go Together
Thanks to DAYS writer Jamey Giddens, we now know that Head Writer Ron Carlivati had proposed a happy ending storyline arc for Bope, but someone higher up nixed it until we got what just streamed on Peacock for the last month. Giddens recently tweeted the following: “I think my adoration for all things Bo and Hope is a matter of public record. Furthermore, Ron pitched a Happily Ever After where the couple reunited, returned to Salem, saw Doug, Julie & Victor then went off to hunt Megan. For whatever reason, that story wasn’t approved.”
We understand that the writing team’s hands were tied when it came to Bo and Hope riding off into the sunset, but we deserved more than what we did get. The soapy angst was absolutely necessary, and it was fascinating to watch Bo Brady try to be Bo Kiriakis while he and Hope were essentially on a collision course with each other. However, that collision could have and should have happened sooner in the arc.
Watching Bo and Hope share a loving and tender reunion in a fantasy just didn’t hit the same way it would have if the audience knew it was real. There was no reason not to have that scene on the cliff (minus the distracting green screen producing ocean waters that did not move) filled with memories and flashbacks that culminated in Bo uttering the words ‘Fancy Face’ and then going into an actual days-long reunion as a payoff for loyal and longtime fans.
If the show wanted to end things with Bo in a coma and Hope praying for him to come back to her, he could have been shot in another scenario after we got what we had been waiting so many years for.
Bo Brady: The Best Days of our Lives Yet To Come? We Sure Hope So
Yes, there is much more story to tell for this iconic pair, and we are sure we will see that story eventually, but during this arc fans were cheated out of the reunion we hoped for the moment Peacock announced that Reckell and Alfonso would be reprising their legendary roles. We can hold out for more while Hope holds out for her hero, but we should have already gotten that “more” before this arc ended.
